Obama Goes for Endless War

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:53 A GMT+01
Obama made it clear that he opposes the war in Iraq not because he's against neo-colonialism or war, but rather on the grounds that the Iraq war is a mistaken deployment of power that fails to advance the global strategic interests of US imperialism.

Goodbye Budweiser: Good Riddance to a Piss-Awful Beer

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:52 A GMT+01
Then Bud got into sports. Anheuser-Busch bought the St. Louis Cardinals and began slapping its logo onto basketball programs, race cars, baseball caps. Nobody has spent more on Super Bowl advertising than Budweiser, which created the Bud Bowl.

Sex Files: Women Aren't 'Naturally' Monogamous

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:52 A GMT+01
After two bottles of wine we slipped back to his flat for a fuck. With no time to shower, I emerged, legs still shaking, en route to my next meeting - with my TV producer friend for coffee. He was very flirtatious, and asked if I'd changed perfumes.

What We Really Need is $8 a Gallon Gas [Car Culture Clips]

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:49 A GMT+01
We spent 50 years using government money to build the freeways that led to the driving-centric, mall-rat lifestyle. We need to restructure society into something better. As bummed as I am to pay a lot for gas, it's a fair price for improving society.

Dancing Badly with the Stars

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:48 A GMT+01
Let's look at some famous celebrities -- Paris Hilton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Daryl Hannah, Felicity Huffman, Ivana Trump, Nicole Richie, Sir Ian McKellen, Jessica Biel, Teri Hatcher (far left)...

Kim Cattrall, Paula Abdul, Shia LaBeouf, Milla Jovovich, Tori Spelling, Heather Graham, Kim Kardashian, Kristen Bell (near left)...

Lydia Hearst, and even Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag -- caught on camera at the very moment when they too thought they could dance.

Economy: How Bad Are Things, Really?

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:42 A GMT+01
Something has clearly gone wrong with the economy. But how bad are things, really? And how bad might they get before better days return?

Even to many economists who recently thought the gloom was overblown, the situation looks grim. The economy is in the midst of a very rough patch. The worst is probably still ahead.

Job losses will probably accelerate through this year and into 2009, and the job market will probably stay weak even longer. Home prices will probably keep falling, shrinking household wealth and eroding spending power.

Obama needs more than the black vote

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:39 A GMT+01
I think it's safe to say that Obama can't win solely or chiefly by ginning up the African-American vote. First of all, a 30% increase is a huge task. That's why I included some calculations above based on 20% increases, which seem perhaps more realistic. But even at 30%, Obama will need to build multiracial coalitions in these and other states.

Ralph Nader: Another Bail Out for the Financial Elites

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:27 A GMT+01
Here they go again! Financial capitalism is crashing. So the lights are on late in Washington’s Federal Reserve, SEC and Treasury Department trying to figure out how socialism (your tax dollars and credits) can once again bail out these big time gamblers with our money.

Every cycle of casino capitalism that heads for, or goes over, the bankruptcy cliffs gets larger and larger. This year’s collapse towers over the bailout of the Savings and Loan banks in the 1980s.

McCain & Obama: Perpetuating US Imperialism

Saturday, 19 July 2008 8:26 A GMT+01
To declare that one is ‘at war’ is immediately to create a war psychosis that may be totally counter-productive for the objective that we seek.

It will arouse an immediate expectation, and demand, for spectacular military action against some easily identifiable adversary, preferably a hostile state; action leading to decisive results.”

In this respect, McCain will have us “win” in Iraq and Obama will have us “win” in Afghanistan.

A Total Collapse of the US Financial System?

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:50 A GMT+01
Fannie and Freddie are unique institutions and will almost certainly be bailed out by the long-suffering taxpayer. However, for the first time, the specter has been raised of a general financial meltdown, such as the US managed to avoid in 1933.

Obama, Afghanistan & American Imperialism

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:49 A GMT+01
More US troops have been killed in Afghanistan than Iraq in the past several months. The Imerialist Obama will intensify their calls for shifting the "war on terror" to Afghanistan, including the invasion of Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province.

New DVD: Michelle Pfeiffer in "I Could Never Be Your Woman"

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:49 A GMT+01
The feminist movie, "I Could Never Be Your Woman", is a smart dissection of the place of women over 40 in film, pop culture, and the workplace. Despite starring Michelle Pfeiffer it was given a death sentence that sent it directly to DVD.

Sex Positions: Women on Top

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:48 A GMT+01
For a man, it provides the opportunity to lie back and enjoy the ride! For a woman, it provides the opportunity to be sexually assertive while she gets exactly the stimulation and arousal she needs to reach orgasm. It's a powerful sexual position!

Lindsay Lohan & Lesbian Liberation

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:47 A GMT+01
Another golden couple proudly joins the not-very-long list of out lesbian power players. One half of the couple is DJ and designer Sam Ronson, who has sexual charisma and an edgy, wiry coolness. The second half is that uber-celebrity Lindsay Lohan.

The End of Movie Sex?

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:46 A GMT+01
An almost daily lesson of our culture is the way in which the internet has transformed our lives, to an extent which we have yet fully to assimilate. Among the biggest victims of this competition has been the erotic power of cinema.

Now, any act involving any actors - animal, child, living, dead - is available online.

McCain eclipsed as TV anchors follow Obama's foreign trip

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:35 A GMT+01
Barack Obama's stock as a superstar candidate rose even further yesterday amid reports that the anchors of all three US television networks were planning to catch up with him on his first overseas trip as a presidential candidate.

Mamma Mia! & The Dark Knight

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:33 A GMT+01
Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan belt out ABBA hits in "Mamma Mia!" Heath Ledger creeps us out in "The Dark Knight."

McCain-As-War-Hero Myth

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:28 A GMT+01
More laughable than the notion of Obama as the second coming of JFK is the founding myth of the McCain campaign: (a) he is a war hero, and (b) said heroism increases his credibility on national security issues. “A Vietnam hero and national security pro,” The New York Times calls him in a typical media blandishment.

Greens Nominate Cynthia McKinney

Friday, 18 July 2008 8:25 A GMT+01
The former member of Congress, the woman and the person of color that the Green Party has nominated is a smart, articulate and outspoken public figure who – despite the fact that she has taken her hits from a media and a political class that never could get comfortable with the idea that a young black women was walking the corridors of power and making no apologies – is more than capable of standing her ground in a presidential race that so far has been longer on style than ideas.

Maureen Dowd: Is Obama Too Precious to Be Mocked?

Thursday, 17 July 2008 7:44 A GMT+01
Obama's followers have placed him on a pedestal. When he is criticized or, god forbid, mocked, the groupies become hysterical. That is the lesson to be learnt from the New Yorker Cartoon. It was a subtle, satirical dig at Obama's preciousness.

Sex Files: Bouncing Breasts - Bionic Bra

Thursday, 17 July 2008 7:43 A GMT+01
Human-powered devices are showing up everywhere, from Rotterdam's sustainable dance floor to human-powered gyms in Hong Kong. The timing seemed perfect ? perhaps even overdue ? for a bra that could harness the untapped power of breast motion.

Pop Culture: Media Exploit "Bad Girl" Celebrities

Thursday, 17 July 2008 7:42 A GMT+01
Recent coverage of female stars in crisis contrasts dramatically with male stars. The media get us to root against 'toxic' celebrities like Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse, but it is taken for granted that we root for 'troubled' male counterparts.

Bailing Out Capitalism: Admitting Collapse

Thursday, 17 July 2008 7:42 A GMT+01
We have nationalised the losses from Bear Stearns through a transfer of risk to the federal government?s balance sheet and have now nationalised the losses generated by Fannie?s and Freddie?s poor management and functionally taken $5,000bn in debt.

Barack Obama: Beware! Man on the Make

Thursday, 17 July 2008 7:41 A GMT+01
Never for one moment has Obama struck me as someone anchored, or even loosely moored to the left, or even displaying the slightest appetite for radical notions, aside from a few tag lines tossed from the campaign bus to placate progressives.
